12th District Candidates Play It Safe

Facebook

In this week's Snollygoster, Ohio's politics podcast from WOSU Public Media, Mike Thompson and Steve Brown discuss the August 7 special election to fill the congressional seat left vacant by Pat Tiberi. The race is too close to call, and Balderson is calling in all reinforcements for the last few days of the race.

In this week's episode:
It's A Nail-Biter

A Monmouth University poll out this week shows Republican state Rep. Troy Balderson with only a one-point lead over Democratic Franklin County Recorder Danny O'Connor in the race for Ohio's 12th District. Among potential voters, Balderson leads 44-43 percent, but he's lost significant ground in the last month. When it's just independents, though, O'Connor must feel pretty good about his 48-32 percent advantage.

President Donald Trump will be in Ohio this weekend to support Balderson, just a few days after Vice President Mike Pence stopped by. On Wednesday, former President Barack Obama endorsed 81 candidates for federal and state offices, but O'Connor was not one of them... and that might be a good thing.

WOSU's Clare Roth interviewed the two candidates this week - you can check out her interviews with both Danny O'Connor and Troy Balderson. With the competition so close, though, both are being careful not to alienate any potential voters.

This week, our governor remembered his former colleague from across the aisle, Rep. Ron Dellums, who passed away on Monday.

Mike Thompson spends much of his time correcting people who mispronounce the name of his hometown – Worcester, Massachusetts. Mike studied broadcast journalism at Syracuse University when he was not running in circles – as a distance runner on the SU track team.
