Another week has passed and still, Ohio House Republicans have failed to elect a permanent Speaker. The battle between those aligned with Finance Chair and state Rep. Ryan Smith and those with S]state Rep. Larry Householder continues to frustrate everyone involved. Meanwhile, the chamber in gridlock, unable to pass legislation.
Speaker Pro Tem Kirk Schuring has set a deadline of Friday for legislators to decide what they want to do, while Smith has picked up some Democratic support in his bid to lead. Statehouse reporter Shane Stegmiller joins the conversation.
You Gotta Fight For Your Right To Work
So-called "right-to-work" laws, which prohibit mandatory union dues, have been a thorny political issue in Ohio. GOP candidate for governor Mike DeWine landed one union's support this week, but when asked if he supported "right-to-work" legislation, his "answer" was, “Um, not on our agenda, at all.”
DeWine's Republican colleagues have pushed such laws, which restrict unions' abilities to impose mandatory dues, for years. Now he's keeping mum.
