Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s speech to the National Governors Association earlier this month came with a warning: Watch out for Chinese attempts to intrude on local governments.
Pompeo’s warning included an unlikely threat against the Sister Cities International program. President Eisenhower launched the program in 1956, calling it “citizen’s diplomacy.”
In the decades since, the Sister Cities program has stood as a partner promoting peace and cultural understanding worldwide.
