U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo speaks during a press conference at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Wednesday Feb. 19, 2020.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s speech to the National Governors Association earlier this month came with a warning: Watch out for Chinese attempts to intrude on local governments.

Pompeo’s warning included an unlikely threat against the Sister Cities International program. President Eisenhower launched the program in 1956, calling it “citizen’s diplomacy.”

In the decades since, the Sister Cities program has stood as a partner promoting peace and cultural understanding worldwide.

Today on All Sides with Ann Fisher: The Trump Administration’s warnings of Chinese espionage and the role of sister cities in U.S.-China relations.

Guests:

  • Joseph Hamrick, China ambassador, Sister Cities Cincinnati
  • Dali Yang, professor of political science, University of Chicago
  • Shane Pyle, past district governor, Rotary International 6690
